New movies this week (June 23-29)

There are creepy dolls and 14-year-old producers

I’m sorry I’m so late with this. I am flogging myself accordingly.

OPENING THIS WEEK

Annabelle Comes Home

Cast: McKenna Grace, Madison Iseman, Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga.
Demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren want to stop a possessed doll, Annabelle, from wreaking further havoc. They bring her home to keep her in a room of locked artifacts, but she awakens the evil spirits in the room. Which is very rude.
5-second hot take: I may be the only person alive who wasn’t knocked out by The Conjuring. As horror films go, The Babadook (released around the same time in all its metaphor-for-single-parenthood glory) was far superior. Having said that, that doll picture is creepy af.

Yesterday

Cast: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Ed Sheeran (!), Kate McKinnon.
Jack Malik is a struggling singer-songwriter whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading. Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed.
Note: I too have fantasized about a universe where I could pretend I came up with the Beatles catalogue.

Himesh Patel and Ed Sheeran in Yesterday. What would you do?

Ophelia

Cast: Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, Tom Felton (of Draco Malfoy fame).
The queen’s brightest lady-in-waiting, Ophelia, becomes drawn to Hamlet. They begin a secret love affair. Betrayal strikes the court, and she has to decide where her loyalty lie.

NEW TO NETFLIX

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Cast: Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin.
Teen Miles Morales becomes Spider-Man of his reality, crossing his path with five counterparts from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities.
